Welcome
Lerlene Nevaril is a traditional quilt maker who published her first book on the concept of Hidden Block Quilts in 2002. Hidden Blocks are the result of changing elements in traditional quilt blocks. They are derivatives of the original block. Their use provides a coordinated quilt with repeating lines and units. Designing multiple alterations leads to multi-block quilts. You can create quilts that are lighter, more open, yet unified. Hidden Blocks have fewer pieces and are quicker and easier to construct. Continuity throughout the quilt is based on design, rather than simply on color or fabric.
Lerlene's second Hidden Blocks book is Crowning Glories, 2005. This book explores the Arrow Crown block, with over thirty Hidden Blocks and almost 100 quilt designs.
One of the prime benefits of working with Hidden Blocks is that they go together quickly. Take that extra time you've saved, and make an exciting pieced back for your quilt. There are a lot of creative and interesting ideas that can be pieced together in an afternoon. That led to Lerlene's next book on pieced quilt backs, Over Easy, in June, 2006.
Lerlene became interested in Amish quilts with their vivid colors against black backgrounds — and the idea for her next book was born. Really dramatic, modern quilts are made with bright solids and prints combined with black. Midnight Quilts, April, 2012, explores this combination. Prints, solids, hand dyes, and batiks are combined with black for two dozen exciting quilts. In this book she branches out and includes traditional designs like Log Cabin and Bow Tie.
